Best Computers for Freelance Writers

Okay fellow freelancers, let’s take a quick sidestep from the typical posts I put up here and look at computers.  I know I normally focus on writing and business tips but let’s be honest, without the tools of the trade what do we really have?

I have to say, though, we are VERY lucky that we don’t need a ton of tools.  Really, the overhead when you’re a freelancer writer is relatively low.  I mean, we work from home, we can do so in our pajamas (yep, I’m rocking a pair of Ghostbuster’s pj pants right now).  We can redirect these savings to our CPUs – essential tools that MUST be extremely reliable.

The Importance of a Great Computer for a Freelance Writer

Whether you predominantly work from home, work on location, travel the world, or only use your computer as backup to your cell phone – whether you write magazine articles, create blog posts, write scripts, or create web content for larger companies you need a reliable computer.

When I started my freelancing career I had a 6-year-old Sony laptop I’d be lugging around since the beginning of my university career.  And when I say lugging I mean it – this thing weight a full 8 or more pounds – it was ridiculous!  Not only was it heavy and hard to take to the library or other important locations, it wouldn’t work if it wasn’t plugged in and it ran so slowly I had to work extra unpaid hours just to try to keep up with my contracts.  That is unacceptable.  As a freelance writer you need to be mobile, you need a laptop with a love battery life and one that can handle word processing, internet searches and other research at lightning speed.

Since I make it my mission to make the lives of freelancers easier and more manageable I decided to apply all those research skills I’ve honed in my own freelancing career to finding the best options for your next laptop computer. The following are my absolute favorite choices.

Best Portable Computer for Bloggers – Microsoft Surface Pro 4

Price: CDN$ 1,632.36
Was: CDN$ 1,666.08

Honestly, the main qualifiers for this choice were that it had to have a good camera (on both sides) and an easily detachable keyboard… OH and it had to be VERY lightweight – bloggers love to move around a lot for inspiration. The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 hits all these main points and more!

With a 12.3-inch screen, front and rear-facing cameras, a full detachable keyboard and many ports, I believe this to be the best choice for the blogger on the go.

Best Laptop For Freelancers On a Strict Budget

I have to say that I’m impressed at the price of this laptop.  If your budget is very small because you are just starting out on your freelancing career, that’s OK.The Asus Chromebook will give you everything you need to get started.

The Asus Chromebook will give you everything you need to get started in your freelancing career.

Look, it’s not the best for people who want to make a living in a graphics career or who need access to high profile offline programs, BUT it does enough to let you blog your way to happiness, write online with online programs (like those available on Google and Live), and stay in touch with clients wherever you are.

Best Computer for Creative Freelancers – Microsoft Surface Book

This is my favorite in general, but I am VERY biased because I own this computer.  I believe that I own it because it’s the best, but you may believe I think its the best because I own it.  Still, it has a lot of great features and I really think its the best for the more creative freelancers out there.

Make fancy graphics for your blog posts?  Like to use your own creative abilities to draw parts of those graphics?  This laptop’s detachable touchscreen gives you all the versatility of a tablet without asking you to sacrifice interface or processing.

Thanks for the post. I’m a writer and designer and I totally agree that different computers are meant for different things. But my mac will always win for met (for my design purposes).
