All writing consultants are different, but what I can tell you is what I do as a writing consultant which will help you. Mostly, I work with people who want to write their own life stories (their memoirs) but who aren’t quite sure where to begin and how to get the job done. Here are some of the things an effective writing consultant will help you with:
1 – Establish and Clarify Goals
Many people sit down, ready to write their memoirs and aren’t sure where to begin. They start to pour their entire lives onto paper and quickly find that an entire life’s story would amount to thousands of pages. Your writing consultant will help you take your story and boil it down to a few key points. Together, you will figure out what it really is you want to say and begin to focus your many thoughts, memories, and experiences into an overall vision.
2 – Keep Track of Information and Plotlines
Writing a memoir can be confusing, at best. To make it more difficult, you still have a life to live. It can be easy to get sidetracked and to lose sight of where you’re going with things. You may not be one of those lucky few people with a home office to store all your pages and thoughts.
As you work together, an effective consultant will keep track of your goals, your plot, information about different events and people in your book. This will be very helpful if you are ever stumped, or stuck on something, because your consultant can become a resource you can reference.
3 – Ask the Hard Questions
Though most of us begin writing our memoirs with the best of intentions, it’s easy to get caught up in certain worries or ways of thinking which lead us to bend or avoid the truth – often without even realizing it (I have been guilty of this in my own writing, at times).A writing consultant can help you break through those barriers and get to the heart of the truth. Whether you choose to use those truths in your book or not are entirely up to you, but the experience can still be therapeutic. After all, writing a memoir is often about personal growth, healing, and closure.

4 – Act as an Experimental Audience
We know our lives inside out. Since we are so familiar with our experiences, thoughts, emotions, family and friends, some things seem to just go without saying. Your reader will often need more information than you realize. A writing consultant can help you find the parts of your story that need more information and depth.
On the other hand, we sometimes spend too much time talking or writing about insignificant details. Things that seem important to us may not be very important to our audiences or our overall goals. Keeping your goals and target audience in mind, the consultant can help you trim the unnecessary fat from your book.
